Summary of the House Committee Version of the Bill

HCS SB 173 -- FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICTS

SPONSOR:  Quick (May)

COMMITTEE ACTION:  Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Elections
by a vote of 10 to 2.

This substitute changes the term of office from three to four
years for the fire protection district director receiving the
second highest number of votes and makes this change applicable
to elections held after March 31, 2003.  The substitute also
prohibits firefighters from electioneering while on duty or while
wearing a uniform.  Violations may result in forfeiture of
employment.

FISCAL NOTE:  No impact on state funds.

PROPONENTS:  Supporters say that the bill will save money by
reducing the frequency of elections.

Testifying for the bill was Senator Quick.

OPPONENTS:  There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
